Ulwaluko

Among Xhosa, the transition to manhood for boys is marked by a ritual called Ulwaluko, also known as traditional male initiation.

The act of circumcision is only one of several activities included in the process of initiation. They spend days isolated in the bush, their faces masked with white paint and wrapped from the elements in a traditional blanket.
